This morning, running along the ocean at sunrise, I was reminded of a conversation that has stayed with me .
The sea was calm. The horizon was clear. Nature doing what it always does — quietly reminding us that there is abundance and rhythm in the world, even when things feel uncertain.
During a conversation with helicopter fire pilots, I asked them what they do in the moments that matter most.
The moments when everything changes.
When the wind suddenly shifts direction.
When the personality of the fire turns unpredictable — almost demonic.
When smoke destroys visibility.
And when there are still courageous fire crews on the ground depending on them.
I expected them to say something about technical skill or training.
Instead, they told me something much simpler.
In those moments, they breathe.
They pause.
They listen.
They observe.
And then they trust their intuition.
That wisdom has stayed with me.
Because leadership, especially in uncertain times, can feel very similar.
The wind changes.
The environment becomes volatile.
Visibility drops.
And the instinct is to react faster.
But sometimes the most powerful leadership move is the same one those pilots take:
Pause.
Breathe.
Observe.
Then act with clarity.
Nature has a remarkable way of reminding us how.
